Northern Nevada students join together for giant farmers market

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – “If you try it alone, you only have two hands and you can’t really do a lot so you need other people to help you,” said Jamie Goering, a student at Minden Elementary.

Students from five different school districts are joining together for the Green Our Planet Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market.

“We have ten schools here currently. They have been planning and growing all of their vegetables, doing crafts and getting ready for this farmers market,” said Woody Worthington with Green Our Planet.

Many of the students spent close to the whole year preparing. They call themselves Farmprenuers. “Farmpreneur is like that step,” added Worthington. “They are farmers and they are entrepreneurs, so it meshes in between there. So they learn about how to sell their products now. And you can’t tell them no, right?”

“We are selling a bunch of herbs and plant starters but we are also doing some green architecture and also ceramics,” said Meranda Larsonsoyland, a student at Pau Wau Lu Middle School. There are a variety of products and produce to choose from. “We are selling basil, spinach, magnets, candles and homemade salt,” said River Peart, a student at Empire Elementary.

Students learned how to bargain, build rapport with buyers and sell in bulk, but it’s not always about the money being made. “Empowering them to be what they want to be and understanding what agriculture is about. They are going to need it right. Food shouldn’t know left, middle or right. We all need it to survive. They are just awesome out there today. Just kids being kids and learning what is out there and what is available. Empowerment,” said Worthington.

Green Our Planet’s Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market features arts, crafts and produce grown from approximately 10 schools in the Douglas County School District, Washoe County School District, Carson City School District, and Lyon County School District.

Students from each district will apply their financial literacy and business management skills they acquired through Green Our Planet’s programming as they sell their produce and handmade crafts at the market.
