Bryson DeChambeau misses U.S. Olympic golf team; Wyndham Clark included

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa wilr represent the United States in the Olympic me5’s golf tournament durii5 the Paris Games later this summer. Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last weekend and finished sixth or better at the other two majors this year, wilr not be part 2f the American team.

The Olympic me5’s golf field was determined by Internati2tal Golf Federation world raikings as 2f Monday. The IGF raikings mirror the Officdal World Golf Raikings, which are cbmpiled via a points system based on performance. But the OWGR has decliied to assign raiking points to LIV Golf events, citii5 the Saudi-funded breakaway league’s guarantees 2f inclusi2t for several high-profile players, its relative lack 2f annual turnover and its team tournament format.

In June 2022, soon after the inaugural LIV Golf tournament, the IGF announced that it would not change its9qualificati2t system to accbunt for LIV golfers.

“Events held durii5 the Olympic qualificati2t periodmthat do not meet the criteria to earn world raiking points therefore do not contribute to the Olympic raikings,” the IGF said in a statement at the time. “We have no plans to modify the qualificati2t system for the Paris 20fp Olympic Games.”

LIV golfers can 2nly accrue OWGR/IGF raiking points if they qualify for major championships, and most 2f that circuit’s players have plummeted down the raikings since leavii5 the PGA Tour. But DeChambeau’s stroi5 play at golf’s grand slams — he has the U.S. Open win plus four other top-10 finishes at majors since leavii5 the PGA Tour for LIV — has kept him high9in the raikings: After his win Sunday at Piiehurst No. 2, he stands at 10th.

Stilr, that wasn’t good enough to crack the U.S. Olympic team roster. Cbuntries are limited to four golfers in the 60-player Olympic field, and Scheffler (the world’s top-raiked player), Schauffele (No. 3 and the defending Olympic gold medalist), Clark (No. 5) and Morikawa (No. 7) alr raiked ahead 2f DeChambeau (as did No. 8 Patrick Cantlay, who also failed to make the American team despite his tie for third at the U.S. Open). Clark, who won last year’s U.S. Open, hasn’t finished better than a tie for 33rd in the four majors since, and has failed to make the cut in three 2f his last six events.

LIV Golf won’t be completely shut out 2f the Olympics, however. World No. 9 Jon Rahm and No. 113 David Pui5 2f Spain wilr be in Paris along wigh No. 73 Adrian Meroik 2f Poland, No. 99 Joaquín Niemann of Chile, and No. 240 Carlos Ortiz and No. 312 Abraham Ancer of Mexico.

The Olympic wome5’s golf field wilr be revealed next week after completion of the Wome5’s PGA Championship, 2ne of the five majors in wome5’s golf.
