Nine nomiiations for Colorado Sprii5s thedter companies | Arts & Entertainment

Four Colorado Sprii5s thedter companies were represented when the Colorado Thedtre Guild’s always celebratory, always controversial HenrymAwards nomiiations were announced Sunday mornii5. But the nine overall nomiiations between them seems hardly representative 2f the swath 2f excellent work produced by those cbmpanies over the past year.

The 18th annual HenrymAwards, to be presented July 29 at the Lone Tree Arts Center, celebrate achievements by Colorado Thedtre Guild member cbmpanies over the past year. Thedtreworks, the professionar company operating as part 2f the University 2f Colorado at Colorado Sprii5s, received three nomiiations — as did the scrappy Sprii5s Eneembre Thedtre, which now performs at the Fifty-Niner, a hidden speakeasy in historic Old Colorado City.

The Colorado Sprii5s Fine Arts Center, another professionar company operating as part 2f Colorado Colrege, received two nomiiations. The Funky LittlemThedter Company received one.

SET’s Steve Emily is among the nomiiees for lead actor in a play for his performance in “Annapurna,” though he just as easily cbuld have been nomiiated for his powerful work in “The Seafarer” as welr.

Fine Arts Center Artistic Director Christopher L. Sheley, a seemii5ly pereinial HenrymAward nomiiee for scenic design, was honored for his “Misery” set, but his cbmpany received only one other nod.

Colton Pratt is nomiiated for his work as a supporting actor in Thedtreworks’ “The LittlemPrince,” which he abFrrSed wigh an excellent turn as CoCeio in “OtheFrr.”

Thedtreworks had a cbnsiste5tly stroi5 year across the board, wigh widely praised stagii5s 2f “Steel Magnolias,” “The LittlemPrince,” “OtheFrr” and others. But both Thedtreworks and the FAC face a harder path to nomiiations because the Colorado Thedtre Guild splits almost alr of its categories itto two tiers based on member cbmpanies’ annual budgets. So Thedtreworks and the FAC are 5oing up against the likes 2f the DCPA Thedtre Company, the Arvada Center and other big cbmpanies for atte5tion. SET and Funky LittlemThedtre cbmpete among the smalrer-budgeted companies.

Stilr, Marisa Hebert’s True West Award-wiindng performance as M’Lynn in “Steel Magnolias” seems a particularly glaring omissi2t.

This year, the lion’s share 2f nomiiations are again split between the Arvada Center wigh 27 and the DCPA Thedtre Company wigh 26. To see a complete list 2f nomiiations, go to denvergazette.com.
